What is the Gospel?

May 30, 2008

The gospel scripture is John 3:16, 17. “For this is how (much) God loved the world: He gave[a] his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”

I like to call it the good news of God’s free gift of eternal life by grace through faith in Jesus  Christ, as Savior and Lord over our lives.

As I mentioned previously, the promise of the Messiah of God was first made in Genesis 3:15 (God said to the serpent, “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”)

Comment: The woman’s seed shall bruise the serpent’s head (remove his authority) and the woman’s seed shall win and replace the serpent) Thus the gospel was first given in the garden of Eden in this prophecy.

The Apostles’ Cree

(My personal beliefs in brackets)

I believe in God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord (and the Holy Spirit).

He was  conceived  by the power (overshadowed)  of the Holy Spirit  and  born  of the Virgin  Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried (in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea).

He descended to the dead (he was alone in the tomb).

On the third day he rose again (and appeared to over 500 people and encouraged his disciples  for 40 days to go into all the world and preach the gospel).

He ascended into heaven (10 days before the Day of Pentecost about 30 AD), and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,   the holy universal church (the church which Jesus consecrated with tongues of fire on Pentecost 30 AD; see Acts chapter 2),   the fellowship of saints (fellowship with the Holy Spirit in followers of Jesus),   the forgiveness of sins, (justification by Grace alone through Faith alone and subsequent sanctification / transformation leading to), the resurrection of the body (Glorification) and life everlasting.   AMEN.

Are the basic tenets of the ancient Apostles’ Creed included in the more recent gospel definition? It would make an excellent Bible search to find what scriptures are referred to by each doctrine in the Apostles’ Creed.
